Ferns

Sensitive Ferns. This type of fern is sensitive to frost and quickly disappears with the advance of cold weather. They grow back in the spring forming a shape like the end of a violin. At this stage of a fern’s life it is called a fiddlehead.

Wood and Christmas Ferns. There are several types of wood fern. The marginal wood fern (also called evergreen wood fern) and the Christmas fern remain green year round. Ferns spread through the distribution of one-celled spores, rather than pollen like flowers.

Wet Feet!
This wetter area of the trail may cause muddy or wet feet at certain times of the year. However, it is also a great place to see some of the common ferns and other moisture loving plants that frequent wet places. The leathery evergreen leaves of Christmas fern are recognizable by the “thumb” at the base of each leaflet. Sensitive fern grows along the trail with its light green, smooth lobed appearance. Other common wood ferns with their filmy foliage can be found from spring to late fall. Many trees along this section also wear a necklace of green moss around their base, indicating that they endure wet conditions for at least part of the year.
