Mt. Vernon Open Space. On the west side of Tullo Road is a twenty-three
acre lot purchased in 1974 for $200,000. This property has been owned by Andrew &
Alice Bogert, Fred & Olivette Spangler (1936), Michael & Barbara Smalley (1949),
and J & B Lagerstrom. For a short period it was used as a summer day camp; it is now
on our Green Acres inventory.
Mount Vernon Road was not shown on the 1873 map of Bridgewater but was
shown in the 1905 map. It was referred to in deeds as the "road leading to Somerville
by way of North Bridge Street" as recently as 1949. The second oldest school in
Bridgewater was constructed in 1751 near the present day intersection of Mount Vernon and
Washington Valley Roads.
Try fitting The road leading to Somerville by way of North Bridge Street on a
street sign! Yet this was the name in property deeds used for the present day Mount Vernon
road until as recently as 1949. The road has been shown on maps for at least a hundred
years. A lot less ink is needed now!
