Old Nursery Site

In several areas near Pete’s bridge and the ‘Old field, you might observe trees of several species growing in rows. This indicates that the area was once part of a tree nursery – trees don’t naturally grow in evenly spaced straight lines! Many are conifers and ornamentals, species that would not be expected naturally along the trail. If they sold by the foot, these trees would now be worth a small fortune!

One species of tree gradually replaces another, as a field becomes a mature forest in a process known as succession.
