General Information: Piedmont

 

Most of Somerset County is within the piedmont. This is a region that extends from Alabama to New York State and between the coastal plain and the Appalachians. It is characterized by gently rolling hills. Its limit is often defined by the fall line, where streams drop quickly from areas with hard bedrock to softer sediments. This line runs across the state roughly through the midlines of Mercer and Middlesex Counties.
