Stephen's Walk
This is the only boardwalk with concrete footings. This was necessary because the soil
in this area was not only muddy on the top but also soft well below the surface.
The construction required the use of batter boards and string lines to layout the concrete
forms at the correct horizontal and vertical locations. The forty bags of concrete were
delivered and mixed on the site with water brought from the brook in buckets.
During the digging and placement of the forms, the scouts found pieces of bicycles and
other debris several feet down. It is possible that when this area was being farmed this
spot may have been used for disposal. Many old farms have areas that were unsuitable for
cultivation and were used as dumps for household and other rubbish.
Stephen Anthony and Troop 88 completed the boardwalk in December of 1997.
